The Claim: For Better Muscle Tone, Go Lighter and Repeat

By ANAHAD O'CONNOR

Lifting heavy weights makes you big and bulky — or at least that’s the conventional wisdom. It’s the reason many women (and some men) who want slim and “toned” physiques opt for lighter weights, lifted more times.

But the notion is not supported by science.

Sitting Ducks?

New findings from the AusDiab study published online in Diabetes Care this week reported that people who took more breaks from sitting were associated with better metabolic health – regardless of their total sitting time, or how much moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity they did. First author and PhD student, Genevieve Healy from the Cancer Prevention Research Centre, in collaboration with researchers at the International Diabetes Institute, measured sedentary time, and breaks in sedentary time, in 168 subjects using an accelerometer worn during waking hours over seven consecutive days. While sedentary time was shown to be detrimentally associated with several metabolic health outcomes, those who regularly interrupted their sitting time – even by such light intensity activities such as walking to go see a colleague, or changing the TV channel manually instead of using the remote – were associated with lower waist circumference, body mass index, triglyceride, and blood glucose levels. High levels of these metabolic measures are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The latest study builds on work that is shifting the health promotion focus beyond just purposeful exercise, such as jogging or cycling, to lower intensity activity throughout the day and suggest new public health recommendations on the breaking-up of sedentary time that are complementary to those for physical activity.

A Closer Look at Vitamin D

85-90% of people are deficient to severely deficient in Vitamin D. This is because we get very little from our diets except for fish and in fortified dairy now.
